TL;DR: Most small business owners should start with Claude Pro at $20/month. The free plan hits usage caps too fast to do real work. Team is for businesses with 2+ people who need access. Enterprise is overkill until you're 50+ employees. Here's the full breakdown.
If you've landed on this page, you've probably already heard that Claude is one of the most powerful AI tools available right now — and you're trying to figure out whether the free version is enough or if paying makes sense.
Here's the honest answer: it depends on what you're trying to do. This guide breaks down every plan, in plain language, so you can make the right call in the next five minutes.
What is Claude, exactly?
Claude is an AI assistant built by Anthropic. Think of it like a very smart, very fast employee who can write, research, analyze, plan, and help you run your business — without complaining, taking sick days, or needing a benefits package.
You access Claude through two main ways:
- Claude.ai — the website and app where you chat with Claude directly (this is what most people use)
- Claude Code — a more advanced tool that runs on your computer and can actually do things like build websites, write code, and connect to other tools
For most small business owners, Claude.ai is where you'll start. The plans below all refer to Claude.ai access.
The four Claude plans
Free
Cost: $0/month
The free plan gives you access to Claude, but with meaningful limits. You'll hit usage caps quickly — often in the middle of a real work session. It's fine for trying Claude out or very occasional use, but if you're trying to use Claude to actually run your business, you'll outgrow it fast.
Best for: Testing Claude before you commit to anything.
Pro
Cost: $20/month
This is where Claude becomes genuinely useful for business. Usage limits are significantly higher (roughly 5x the free tier), you get access to Claude's most capable models, and you can use features like Projects — which let you give Claude persistent context about your business so you're not re-explaining yourself every single time.
Best for: Solo business owners, freelancers, content creators, and anyone using Claude daily for their own work.
This is the plan most of the tutorials on this site are built around.
Team
Cost: $30/person/month (minimum 2 people)
Everything in Pro, plus shared workspaces so your team can collaborate, admin controls, and pooled usage across your group. If you have even two or three people who would benefit from Claude, Team is usually cheaper than three separate Pro accounts and works better.
Best for: Small agencies, partnerships, or any business where more than one person needs daily Claude access.
Enterprise
Cost: Custom pricing
Enterprise adds SSO, compliance features, audit logs, and the kind of governance controls that larger companies need. Unless you're a mid-size or larger business with IT and compliance requirements, you don't need this yet.
Best for: Companies with 50+ employees and real security or compliance requirements.
The quick decision guide
Answer these three questions:
1. Are you the only person who needs access? Yes → Pro at $20/month is your answer. Stop here.
2. Do you have 2+ people on your team who need it? Yes → Team plan. It's only $10/person more than Pro and the collaboration features are worth it.
3. Do you need Claude to actually do things — build tools, run automations, connect to your other software? Yes → You'll want to look at Claude Code, which is included with Pro and Team but requires a separate setup. (Full guide here on what Claude Code is and whether you need it.)
What about the API?
You'll sometimes see people mention the "Anthropic API" as a separate thing. This is for developers who want to build their own applications using Claude — like embedding Claude into a custom tool or automating it to run without you being present.
You don't need API access to use Claude for your business. If you ever get to the point where you want to build something that runs on its own (like an automated content pipeline or an AI employee that works while you sleep), that's when API access becomes relevant. For now, Pro or Team is all you need.
The bottom line
If you're a small business owner who wants to use Claude for marketing, content, customer communications, or day-to-day operations:
Start with Pro at $20/month.
It unlocks everything you need to learn, experiment, and build real workflows. If you hit the limits (which power users do), you can upgrade. But for most people, Pro is the sweet spot between cost and capability.
